One year after finishing a season without a single win The Prime Bahamas Angels are the JBLN Coach Pitch Division Champions for 2006. They defeated the Ports International Phillies on Saturday 12 -2 to complete the sweep of the championship round.
Red hot batting all through the order and solid defense were the keys to the victory.
The angels scored six runs in the top of the first inning to set the pace. Tyler Hall let off with a single, but was thrown out trying to take second, well done Phillies’ defense. Jonathan Key followed by blasting a ground-rule double to right center field. This was followed by consecutive hits from Travis Ferguson, Spencer Andrews, Bertram Murray Jr, Andre Ferguson, John Bee Chea, Xavier Ocon and Barry Chea.
The Phillies came up in the bottom of the first and were able to score two runs by Glen Ritchie and Sean Wrinkle and had one more opportunity to score. However, Angels’ catcher Travis Ferguson was able to block the plate and tag the runner out as he attempted to come home. The Phillies were unable to score the rest of the game as they went three-up three-down in the second third and fourth innings.
The Angels added three more runs in the top of the second with hits by Dillon Dean Jr, Sandron Morley, who was forced out at second base, and Tyler Hall. All were brought home by Jonathan Key’s second homerun of the series. Way to go Johnny Rocket!
Another three runs were added in the third when Spencer Andrews led of with a double. Bertram Murray Jr, John B Chea and Barry Chea all followed with RBIs to put the Angels up 12 -2, which would be enough to end the game in the fourth due to the Mercy Rule.
The Angels defense allowed two runs in the first, but were able to shut down the Phillies’ offense for the remainder of the game. Leading the defense was Spencer Andrews who continued his excellent play at third by fielding ground balls and making the long throws to first for the outs.
Andre Ferguson at shortstop, John B. Chea at second, Bertram Murray Jr on the pitcher’s mound, Travis Ferguson behind the plate and Jonathan Key at first base all made contributions during the playoffs to keep the Phillies at bay.
While the outfield consisted of mainly the younger players on the team, they did their part in keeping those hard hit balls that made it through the infield in play, and by not allowing a lot of ground rule doubles.
Our hats are off to Luke Barker, Barry Chea, Dillon Dean Jr, Tyler Hall, Sandron Morley, Scott Roberts and Xavier Ocon our “Angels in the Outfield”.
Congratulations to the Angels defense for allowing the fewest runs in their division this year.
